SORIA+MADERA. Wood for tod@s: training, realization and consolidation of the sector to build a sustainable future.

FEDER

SORIA+MADERA aims to consolidate a solid value chain around wood from sustainable forest management. To this end, it carries out specialised training actions, digitalisation of forest planning and support for green entrepreneurship. In addition, it promotes the improvement of forest governance and the certification of forests for their services. With all this, results will be achieved related to green employment (activating 12 business initiatives, with 26 direct jobs), professional training (with technical training of 72 professionals specialized in wood construction), sustainable planning and management of the territory and fire risk reduction (with FSC certification in 4,800 ha of forest, improvement of governance and forest planning in 40 communities, and grazing facilitation on 12,600 ha).

This project seeks to coordinate, capitalize and promote different successful actions carried out over the last few years in the province of Soria to articulate a solid value chain around wood and its construction possibilities. The project proposes an integrated strategy that promotes wood construction through specialised training itineraries, demonstration buildings and open digital tools; activates collective forest management by improving its governance and planning; reinforces the territorial base of the bioeconomy with silvicultural treatments and green infrastructures; and promotes FSC certification of management and chain of custody with an integrative vision that incorporates ecosystem services. All this in order to advance sustainability, territorial cohesion and green employment in a rural environment with high potential for transformation.

  • Promoting wood construction: articulating a specialized training itinerary that allows professionals in the assembly of wooden buildings to be put on the market; constructing buildings that are used as demonstration and informative spaces; disseminating the benefits, opportunities and construction alternatives with wood.
  • Activate collective forest management: by training forest community leaders; strengthening its governance; implementing existing planning instruments; creating new ones.
  • Strengthen the territorial base of the bioeconomy: carrying out forestry work and the creation of roads and logging routes in forests with structural deficiencies that prevent or limit the mobilization of their bioeconomy and the prevention of forest fires.
  • Promote forest certification of forest management and the chain of custody through FSC, under an integrative perspective that includes ecosystem services.

Six complementary actions that activate the different links in the wood value chain and promote a comprehensive territorial development strategy based on the bioeconomy.

  • Communication, awareness and dynamization for the opening of the wood construction sector. Implementation of the communication and participation strategy of the project. It seeks to increase public visibility and inspiration around sustainable wood construction and responsible forest management.
  • Design and execution of intensive training programs based on challenges. 4 timber building programmes will be designed and delivered, combining hands-on learning and real construction by FSC certified demonstrators. It involves vocational training centres and professionals in the sector. The technical training of 72 professionals specialized in wood construction is expected, expanding the training program launched in the PRTR CONSTRUYENDOMADERAULA project (4 prototypes + ASFOSO warehouse located in the industrial estate next to MaderaulaLab, built within the project), 2,000 new people interested in training in digital innovation and 12 business initiatives activated with 26 indirect jobs.
  • Digital tools, open innovation and entrepreneurship to expand the wood construction sector. Two digital tools will be developed (virtual tour of the value chain and library of construction solutions) and a program to accompany green entrepreneurship will be activated that will facilitate the creation of new companies or lines of business.
  • Activation of collective forest management. Legal, administrative and technical support to forest communities to improve their governance and management capacity in 40 communities (providing a management board to forests of partners constituted in the PRTR RECONECTA project), training 65 managers achieving an impact on 22,600 ha. A consultation department and all kinds of training and dynamization actions will be set up.
  • Territorial activation and planning for the sustainable mobilization of forest resources. Updating of forest planning, drafting of new instruments, recognition of multi-ownership scenarios FSC certification including ecosystem services, activation of management through warnings, execution of demonstration stands, and creation of forest roads for the mobilization and prevention of fires.
  • Management and monitoring. The correct development of the project and its methodological adjustment to achieve the objectives sought are guaranteed, a post-project strategy is established to ensure its sustainability and scalability, and the carbon footprint is measured and, where appropriate, offset to make the project neutral.
  • Technical training in wood construction: 72 qualified professionals; 12 training centres.
  • Linked professionals: 2,000 new people interested in training will be identified Digital Innovation; 20 educational entities and 2,000 people will use the construction solutions designed.
  • Green entrepreneurship: 12 new business initiatives activated; 26 indirect jobs generated.
  • Forest management: 40 communities will improve their governance and 65 decision-makers will be trained; 32 municipalities, 2 natural parks and 3 protected areas will improve their forest management; 22,600 ha will improve their forest planning; 4,800 ha of forests will certify their ecosystem services under FSC; 34,000 tonnes of wood/biomass will be placed on the market; 5,000 ha of forests (green infrastructures) will have forest roads to reduce the risk of fires; the grazing of 12,600 ha will be facilitated; 45,146 people will have better green infrastructure.
