The initiative seeks to build a resilient forest landscape in the face of climate change and rural abandonment, promoting active management that reduces the risk of fires, increases water availability and conserves biodiversity, boosting the forest bioeconomy. To this end, it will carry out strategic planning with a 2050 vision in the province of Barcelona, recover 150 ha of pastures, where it will boost extensive livestock farming by integrating fire prevention and biodiversity conservation, carry out ecohydrological forest management in 50 ha, and carry out the adaptation of preventive infrastructures that favour biodiversity, such as the installation of escape ramps at water points. In addition, it will promote the creation of new forest value chains, the valorization of ecosystem services through climate credits (PROMACC) in 150 ha and the implementation of awareness-raising and dissemination actions for more than 10,000 people. All this is intended to achieve results related to planning and prevention of fires of 500,000 ha and the creation of green employment.

Promote the bioeconomy, promoting the development, improvement and consolidation of green infrastructure, connectivity, the restoration of degraded ecosystems and multifunctional landscapes, with the aim of increasing biodiversity and its conservation, adaptation to climate change, the prevention of forest fires and the fight against desertification, while generating opportunities and employment in rural areas and contributing to the fight against the demographic challenge

Promote active forest management for fire prevention, which integrates the creation of silvopastoral mosaics, increases the generation of blue water, conserves biodiversity and reactivates the rural economy through the forest bioeconomy.

The project deploys a comprehensive strategy aimed at transforming the forest landscape of the province of Barcelona to increase its resilience, prevent forest fires and boost the bioeconomy. The main actions are:

  • BCN Forest Resilience Strategic Plan: Preparation of a strategic document with a 2050 vision that defines a resilient landscape model through participatory governance and advanced scientific tools.
  • Recovery of pastures and promotion of extensive livestock farming: Silvicultural interventions and creation of livestock infrastructures to recover open spaces and reintroduce grazing as a fuel management tool.
  • Ecohydrological forest management: Technical thinning in dense forests, hydrological monitoring and preparation of a manual of good practices to increase infiltration and generation of blue water.
  • Adaptation of preventive infrastructures for biodiversity: Incorporation of measures such as ramps for fauna at water points and development of technical protocols to make prevention and conservation compatible.
  • Promotion of the forest bioeconomy: Development of prototypes and products derived from local wood and other non-timber resources, creating new value chains and green employment.
  • Valuation of ecosystem services through forest climate credits: Identification and design of pilot projects under the PROMACC standard to reward sustainable forest management.
  • Public awareness: Informative campaigns, educational materials and participatory activities to bring urban society closer to the rural environment and the mosaic agroforestry model.
  • Territorially, 500,000 ha will be planned under a resilient forestry model that will reduce fuel continuity, increase ecological functionality and improve water infiltration. It is estimated that 5.7 M inhabitants. will benefit from these new green infrastructures.
  • Environmentally, 150 ha of pasture will be recovered on former agricultural uses, ecohydrological practices will be applied in 50 ha and wildlife ramps will be installed. At least 12 species and/or habitats of interest will be favoured. Manuals of good practices and integration of biodiversity in prevention infrastructures will be developed. Biodiversity will be strengthened.
  • Socio-economically, the project will act in 27 municipalities with demographic challenges, generating 36 direct and indirect jobs in forest management, extensive livestock, bioeconomy, communication and governance. Prototypes of wood and non-wood products will be developed and business models linked to non-timber products will be promoted.
  • Forest climate credits will be promoted under the PROMACC system in 150 ha, rewarding carbon capture and other environmental services.
  • A culture of co-responsibility will be fostered through participatory governance.
