Implementation of a comprehensive line for the recovery of plastic waste at the Igualada plant

PRTR Call for Proposals Project

The CGM project proposes a comprehensive plastics recovery line, using advanced pre-treatment, washing, shredding and extrusion technologies. These technologies allow post-consumer plastics to be recovered efficiently, ensuring greater purity and quality of the recycled material. The highly automated process reduces operating costs and improves sustainability by optimizing energy consumption and minimizing waste generation, offering a more advanced and cost-effective solution compared to traditional recycling methods.

The main objective of the project is to implement a plastic recovery line that allows the transformation of post-consumer plastic waste into high-quality recycled products, in this case, reusable recycled pellets in industrial applications. CGM currently manages 100,000 tonnes/year at the Igualada plant. The existing plastics recovery line only includes the washing and shredding stages, and processes 3,600 tonnes of plastic per year, where 60% of plastic waste is recovered, while the remaining 40% (1,440 tonnes of plastic/year) is sent to landfills. With the implementation of the new comprehensive line for the recovery of plastics through mechanical treatment, it is estimated that CGM will process 10,080 tons of plastic per year, managing to recover 90% of plastic waste, that is, 9,072 tons of plastic will be recovered per year.
