MARISCAWEB. Web application to integrate and analyze knowledge of the intertidal environment.

Pleamar program

MARISCAWEB will develop innovative software to integrate and analyse environmental variables at high temporal and spatial resolution of the intertidal zone throughout the Spanish territory.

The project contemplates the development of two digital platforms, using participatory approaches with the artisanal coastal fishing sector. On the one hand, a web application designed to facilitate access to the general public and specially adapted to the information needs of fishing communities. On the other, an open access program aimed at scientific users.

This software will allow the characterization of intertidal ecosystems by means of abiotic and biotic variables obtained through geomatic techniques and calculated at different scales. It will also facilitate the development of a methodology in pilot cases that allows the analysis of explanatory variables of the state of the ecosystem and changes in relevant economic activities (e.g. shellfish catches).

The intertidal belt is a dynamic ecosystem where factors such as tides, climate, temperature and salinity influence the species that inhabit it. To effectively manage fishing in these areas, such as shellfishing on foot, environmental data of high spatial and temporal resolution are needed. However, this data is scattered and difficult to integrate. MARISCAWEB will develop digital tools to monitor and analyse the intertidal ecosystem. The project will develop a web application for artisanal coastal fishing communities, managers and the general public. Open source programs will also be developed for marine ecologists, scientists, and analysts.

The project will cover the entire Spanish coast, but will examine in more detail certain areas of Galicia, a region affected by the drop in shellfish catches. MARISCAWEB will offer solutions to better understand these ecosystems and strengthen the sustainability and resilience of coastal communities.

Specific objectives:

OE1. Understand the key needs and challenges of intertidal ecosystems.
OE2. Intertidal monitoring at local scale (for shellfish shellfishing on foot).
OE3. Development of accessible platforms and tools for ecosystem management.
OE4. Validation of data and tools through participatory verification.
