NORAVES II. Trophic ecology and accidental mortality of seabirds in the SPA western Galician-Cantabrian migratory corridor and its relationship with fishing activity and resources.

Pleamar program

The NORAVES II project aims to improve knowledge about the trophic ecology of seabirds and their interaction with fishing activity in the North Atlantic Marine Demarcation, with special attention to the Galician-Western Cantabrian Migratory Corridor SPA. In this context, it comprehensively addresses one of the main seabird conservation problems: accidental mortality in fishing gear (bycatch). To this end, it combines scientific research, fieldwork, collaboration with the fishing sector and dissemination and training actions.

NORAVES II is structured into several complementary lines of work. First, the spatial distribution and use of the marine habitat by different bird species will be analysed through censuses, colony monitoring and the use of remote tagging technologies (GPS-GSM). These data will allow us to identify key areas for feeding, migration and reproduction.

Secondly, the project will delve into the trophic ecology of seabirds, assessing their diet and their relationship with the availability of fishery resources, including the role of discards. This analysis will allow a better understanding of the dependence of birds on fishing activity.

Another fundamental line will be the study of the interaction between birds and fisheries, through scientific shipments, collection of bycatch data and analysis of risk factors. Based on this information, the real impact of accidental mortality will be estimated and risk maps will be drawn up.

On this basis, the project will test mitigation measures in direct collaboration with the fisheries sector, evaluating their effectiveness under real working conditions. At the same time, protocols for recording and monitoring accidental catches will be developed.

NORAVES II also incorporates an important social component, promoting the training of marine professionals, the active participation of the fishing sector and cooperation between public and private entities. It also integrates the gender perspective in a transversal way, analysing the role of women in the sector and encouraging their participation.

Finally, the project includes communication and dissemination actions aimed at society as a whole, as well as the preparation of management and conservation proposals that contribute to national and European plans and strategies in the field of marine biodiversity.

Overall, NORAVES II aims to generate applied knowledge and practical tools that contribute to the conservation of seabirds and the sustainability of fishing activity, favouring an integrated management of the marine environment.

NORAVES II aims to contribute to the improvement of knowledge of the factors that influence the trophic ecology of seabirds in the North Atlantic Marine Demarcation and the Galician-Western Cantabrian Migratory Corridor SPA and their relationship with fishing activity and accidental mortality in fishing gear, in addition to making management and mitigation proposals within the framework of state management strategies and plans.

To achieve this objective, the following specific objectives are proposed:

OE1. Describe the distribution and habitat in the sea of the target seabird species in the study area.
OE2. To carry out a spatio-temporal analysis of the trophic ecology of seabirds in the study area in relation to the availability of fishery resources.
OE3. To analyse the interaction between seabirds and fishing activity and the impact of accidental mortality on fishing gear.
OE4. Test measures to mitigate accidental mortality in collaboration with the fishing sector.
OE5. To train professionals from the sea and related fields in the field of accidental mortality, registration, management and mitigation of impact.
OE6. Promote cooperation between public and private entities, intersectoral collaboration, and the participation of the sector in the management and mitigation of accidental mortality.
OE7. Disseminate and communicate to society, with special attention to sea professionals, the importance of the conservation of seabirds in the territory, the impact of accidental mortality and good practices for its mitigation.
OE8. To analyse the gender component internally and externally and its impact on the dynamics of change in the fishing sector.
OE9. Propose management and mitigation measures to reduce accidental mortality.
OE10. To contribute specifically to the objectives of the following plans and strategies:
– Management Plan for the SPA Galician-Western Cantabrian Migratory Corridor
– Conservation Strategy for the Balearic Shearwater in Spain
– Shearwater Conservation Strategy in Spain
– Conservation Strategy for the European Shag in Spain
– National Plan for the Reduction of Bycatch in Fishing
Activity-Criterion D1C1 of bycatch of the Framework Directive on the Marine Strategy (MSFD) of the European Union.
