PERIZIA+. Co-management based on new technologies for the conservation of sea urchin in Galicia and Asturias.

Pleamar program

The PERIZIA+ project, in close collaboration with the guilds, gives continuity to the work carried out in PERIZIA through the application and transfer of innovative underwater vision and artificial intelligence technologies previously validated, in order to integrate them into real processes of participatory management and co-management of the sea urchin in Galicia and Asturias. In this new phase, the project not only promotes the operational use of these tools in scientific campaigns and pilot areas, but also advances in the optimization of the automatic urchin recognition algorithm and in the generation of a structured and validated database that supports the management of the resource.

All this will allow obtaining more extensive, objective and periodic information on the real state of sea urchin populations, improving the scientific-technical basis for decision-making and favouring the design of adaptive management plans. Likewise, PERIZIA+ will promote spaces of shared governance between guilds, the scientific community and administrations, reinforcing transparency, co-responsibility and ecological, social and economic sustainability of the artisanal sea urchin fishery.

The objective of PERIZIA+ is to contribute to the conservation and sustainable management of sea urchin (Paracentrotus lividus) populations through the application and transfer of innovative underwater vision and artificial intelligence technologies, previously developed in the PERIZIA project. Within the framework of the project, we will work closely with the brotherhoods to promote their integration into participatory co-management processes.

Specific objectives:

OE1. Develop scientific campaigns in pilot areas of Asturias to operationally apply underwater vision systems and artificial intelligence in the collection of population data of the sea urchin.
OE2. To generate a structured and validated database that supports the management of the resource and improves knowledge about the status of sea urchin populations.
OE3. Optimize and improve the automatic urchin recognition algorithm to increase its accuracy, reliability, and applicability on a large scale.
OE4. Design and implement pilot plans for adaptive management in Asturias, combining technological data and local knowledge.
OE5. To promote the integration of these technologies into the administrative and management procedures already existing in Galicia, proposing their incorporation into official management plans.
OE6. Promote participatory co-management processes through governance spaces between guilds, administrations and the scientific community, as well as through participatory evaluation methodologies.
OE7. Develop communication, dissemination, education and awareness-raising actions linked to the project and its results.
OE8. Incorporate the gender perspective in a transversal way through specific conferences, interviews and visibility actions.
