The general objective of the GEMA project is to contribute to the knowledge and conservation of the porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) in the Alboran Sea through a multidisciplinary approach that integrates visual, acoustic, molecular and socio-ecological methodologies, in order to assess its distribution and threats and promote its protection through science, fisheries management and social awareness.
This will be achieved through specific objectives (EOs):
OE1. To characterize the presence, seasonal distribution and habitat use of porpoises in the Alboran Sea.
OE2. Assess the threats associated with artisanal fisheries by analysing effort and its overlap with the presence of porpoises.
OE3. To transfer the knowledge generated and raise awareness among key sectors and society about the situation of the porpoise and its conservation
