GARRAF AT SEA 2: Evaluation of measures to reduce the negative effects of fishing activity as well as measures to mitigate them in the Marine Area of the Coasts of Garraf and Plana del Foix.

Pleamar program

This project aims to consolidate a sustainable, productive and innovative fishing model, compatible with the conservation of marine biodiversity, through an approach based on scientific knowledge and collaboration with the fishing sector. In this context, one of the main axes will be the identification and characterization of recruitment areas, based on previous evidence, through specific sampling that includes analysis of catches, size and maturity structures, as well as the use of underwater cameras coupled to fishing gear. Likewise, the characterization of areas of accumulation of marine litter and microplastics will be carried out.

At the same time, fishing gear, both artisanal and trawling, will be evaluated and improved through the testing of innovative solutions such as selective gear for yellowtail and techniques that reduce casting time, with the aim of minimizing discards and improving efficiency. Finally, a pilot system will be developed to improve the reproductive condition of coastal species of fishing interest.

The main objective of the project is to contribute, through scientific knowledge, to the evaluation of different measures to reduce and mitigate the negative effects of fishing activity in the Marine Area of the Garraf and Plana del Foix Coasts. The second phase of GARRAF EN MAR continues to work within the framework of the scientific-fisherman collaboration and aims to give continuity to the FIFO (Strategic Plan for Sustainable Fisheries) obtained in the first phase.

Specific objectives:

OE1. To set up or renew a committee with representatives of the fisheries sector, the Administration and the scientific community to agree, monitor and evaluate innovative measures that reduce impacts and favour the recovery of resources, contributing to the re-evaluation of the FIFO on a scientific basis.
OE2. Carry out a detailed characterisation of areas of special ecological interest within the Marine Space, identifying areas of recruitment or significant accumulation of marine litter.
OE3. Reduce the negative impact of fishing by designing and implementing mitigation measures in fishing gear and its use, and assess their effect on fishing selectivity and efficiency (new technological design of selective artisanal fishing gear for yellowtail, trawling technique perfected to reduce discards and increase catch quality).
OE4. Evaluate specific measures to mitigate the negative impact of fishing activity, through the design and implementation of a system for the improvement of the reproductive condition of species of fishing interest such as cuttlefish (and, if possible, squid).
OE5. Re-evaluate in an integrated way the FIFO of the Marine Space of the Garraf and Plana del Foix Coasts, incorporating new knowledge to propose its updating through adjustments in fisheries management, Marine Space planning and mitigation measures.
OE6. To transfer the results to the agents of the territory for their application in maritime planning and fisheries management.
OE7. Disseminate the results of the project through a plan aimed at both the fishing sector and the general public, highlighting its value for natural and cultural heritage and the blue economy.
