The Association of Naturalists of the Southeast, ANSE, in collaboration with the Biodiversity Foundation, has started a project to refurbish two wetlands, in the lagoon of Los Carrizales (El Hondo, Elche, Alicante) and the abandoned treatment plant of El Algar (Cartagena).
In the area of El Hondo, ANSE, together with the association Friends of the Wetlands of the South of Alicante (AHSA) and with the community of irrigators of Los Carrizales, have developed environmental restoration actions and expansion of the aguazal. Meanwhile, in the Mar Menor, ANSE has proposed to naturalise the ponds of the old El Algar treatment plant.
These are two key spaces for the survival of this aquatic bird, on which these species depend, so that with these restoration actions it is possible to prevent its disappearance and favors the conditions for its reproduction in the area. This is a first step that allows the loyalty of this aquatic bird, and that is complemented by social dissemination activities and the development of an infrastructure for the interpretation of the environment and observation of fauna in this area.
