The Secretary General for Territory and Biodiversity of the Ministry of the Environment, Antonio Serrano, presented today in Murcia the Special Plan for the Management of the Public Hydraulic, Coastal and Natural Heritage Domain of the Campo del Mar Menor.

The objectives of the project are, to a large extent, in line with those of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) which, it should not be forgotten, affects both inland and coastal waters and their associated ecosystems. In fact, the WFD aims to “maintain or regenerate the structure and functionality of aquatic ecosystems”, of which the Campo del Mar Menor has relevant examples of very diverse kinds. Therefore, a large part of the development of the Plan can be assimilated as part of the programme of measures that the WFD demands from the future Hydrological Plan of the Demarcation of the Segura and, in that sense, it must be integrated into it.

The work to be carried out must also shape what would be the image of a territorial model that would allow a sustainable use of natural resources. This model would also be compatible with the conservation of the ecological values of the Campo del Mar Menor and should also be compatible with a socio-economic development that would imply a significant improvement in the well-being of the citizens residing in the area.
