Enagás, Capital Energy and EDP Renováveis have joined the Spanish Business and Biodiversity Initiative (IEEB), an initiative of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge that aims to support the integration and conservation of biodiversity in business strategies of the different business sectors of the economy of our country, in addition to identifying opportunities and alternative and innovative business projects.

After joining the initiative in recent months, these three companies join the 25 that are already part of the IEEB, joining forces to improve the connection of the Spanish business fabric with the conservation of natural heritage and biodiversity.

By joining the IEEB, companies sign the Biodiversity Pact, thus assuming a series of commitments to ensure the continuous improvement of their business relationship with the conservation of nature and natural capital. In addition, this commitment is part of the activity of the private sector to meet the objectives of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity.

Enagás has more than 50 years of experience in the development, maintenance and operation of gas infrastructures. Its sustainable strategy is aligned with the 2030 Agenda and is committed to new, more sustainable energy solutions: the development of renewable gases, the promotion of new uses of gas in the transport sector and energy efficiency to optimise resources and reduce polluting emissions. Enagás also establishes the objective of no net loss of biodiversity in construction projects and in the facilities in which it operates.

Capital Energy, founded in 2002 and present in more than 1,000 Spanish municipalities, focuses its activity on the promotion, construction and operation of electricity production facilities from renewable energies, mainly wind and solar. Its objective is to contribute to an ecological and fair transition of the economy and society, in addition to innovation and digitalization. In the development of its projects, it carries out exhaustive environmental impact studies, evaluating the risks to adopt appropriate measures guaranteeing greater protection and a lower impact on biodiversity.

For its part, EDP Renewables (EDPr) is a world leader in the renewable energy sector and the world’s fourth largest producer of wind energy. The company has updated its strategic plan until 2022 to include specific commitments on contributing to decarbonisation, sustainable use of natural resources and contributing to the conservation of biodiversity. Birdlife is a key point of protection, given its activity, and therefore it has bird monitoring programmes and corrective measures on power lines. In addition, EDPR promotes sustainable practices among its suppliers in the supply chain and takes into account the impacts in the construction and operation phase.
