Extremadura is committed to the sustainable development of the dehesa

The preservation of the dehesa and the combination with actions that promote tourism and local economic development continues to be key for the regional governments. An example of this is found in Extremadura.

“The dehesa is 80% aged and this is something that worries us deeply because it is one of the most valuable forest ecosystems in our region,” said the general coordinator of the Presidency and Institutional Relations of the Government of Extremadura, Juan Parejo. This is why 22.5 million euros have been budgeted for the regeneration of some species such as the overhead or cork oak, as well as for fire prevention, a commitment that will generate up to 60,000 jobs at the same time, in order to support an economic recovery and sustainable management of this ecosystem.

This initiative has been joined by others such as the Plantabosques Environmental Volunteering Program, organized by the Youth Institute, the General Directorate of the Environment and ADENEX, which has managed to plant 17,640 plants thanks to the collaboration of more than 700 young people who wanted to be part of this activity.
