FF. AA. RR The Prince and Princess of Asturias presided over the ceremony of the European Business Awards at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in Madrid this morning, which is awarded every two years by Fundación Entorno-BCSD España with the support of the Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs and the Biodiversity Foundation.

These awards go to those companies that demonstrate a firm commitment to sustainable development. In front of an audience of more than 300 representatives of companies and institutions, the managing director of Fundación Entorno, and president of the Jury, Cristina García-Orcoyen, stressed that all the award-winning companies “are excellent examples that the change towards a more sustainable way of producing goods and services is not only necessary, but also technologically possible and economically profitable”.

“Spain is one of the EU countries in which these Awards receive the most nominations. In total, 630 companies have submitted projects over the 14 years in which these awards have been awarded, 55 have been awarded in Spain and four have reached the highest award in the EU, competing with the best in Europe,” he explained.

The awards for this Spanish edition of the European Environment Awards 2009-2010, which were attended by 110 projects, 16% more than in the last edition, went to Endesa, Gamesa, Indra, OHL, Ferrovial, Sanitas, Alvarella Ecoturismo, A&B Laboratorios de Biotecnología, Fundiciones del Estanda and Agbar.

The award-winning companies in the Spanish Section will access the European final, the winners of which will be announced in Brussels on June 2.
