Getting to know the orange coral, a new study promoted by the Biodiversity Foundation

Share on:

Knowing and studying the orange coral banks scattered along the coast is the objective of the new study funded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment, through the Biodiversity Foundation.

This initiative, which will last one year and an investment of 28,000 euros, aims to learn about the ecological characteristics of this species, as well as its conservation status and the effects produced by climate change on a threatened species, very sensitive to modifications to its natural habitat.

The Biodiversity Foundation has granted 20,000 euros to the Ceuta Museum of the Sea Foundation which, in collaboration with the environmental association Septem Nostra, will be in charge of carrying out this project through the provision of thermographs for its study and effective management and planning. These colonies, located only in the southwestern part of the Mediterranean, especially around Ceuta, Melilla and the Canary Islands, are one of the wonders of its seabed and one of the most important globally. Based on this study, it is planned to produce a publication on the oldest corals in the Mediterranean Sea.
