The International Workshop “Maritime Transport and Biodiversity Conservation: Coordinating efforts for a coherent management of the risk of collision between ships and cetaceans” was held in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on 25 and 26 October, an action whose objective was to analyse the problem of collision with maritime transport faced by cetaceans and which has been convened by the organisation Alnitak, within the LIFE+ INDEMARES project.
During the two days, the aim was to launch an international programme of coordinated actions that will allow solutions to be obtained. To this end, 25 professionals have clarified a first vision of the International Communication and Training Programme for Seafarers, with the aim of developing measures to reduce the impact of ships on these protected species, taking into account the safety and effectiveness of transport operations. The findings will be submitted to the Marine Environment Protection Committee and the Maritime Safety Committee of the International Maritime Organization.
