Until July 2016 you can visit the exhibition “Aquaculture? Discover it”, an exhibition promoted by the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment. The Secretary General of Fisheries of the Ministry, Andrés Hermida, has inaugurated the exhibition coinciding with Aquaculture Day, in an event in which he has been accompanied by the Director General of Livestock and Fisheries of the Region of Murcia, Carmen Teodora Morales, the director of the National Museum of Underwater Archaeology, Iván Negueruela Martínez, and the mayor of Cartagena, José López Martínez.
Hermida stressed that the exhibition aims to bring society closer to the reality and perspectives of a strategic sector in many areas of our country, which contributes to the contribution of proteins in food and sustainable development.
The exhibition, said the Secretary General of Fisheries, allows visitors to learn about the origins and history of aquaculture to the present day, its evolution in terms of production, the particularities of marine and continental crops and the main farmed species, as well as the role that these products play in our diet, the importance of R+D+i and the relevance of this activity in sustainable development and international cooperation.
The exhibition began its tour in 2010 at the National Museum of Natural Sciences in Madrid. Since then, more than a million people have visited it in the eight cities where it has been exhibited. In parallel to the exhibition, visitors have been able to participate in the numerous parallel activities scheduled, such as school visits, tastings or informative conferences, among others.
The opening of the exhibition is part of the celebrations of the 4th edition of Aquaculture Day in our country, which since 2012 has been celebrated every November 30, coinciding with the feast of San Andrés, patron saint of the sector.
Under the coordination of the Biodiversity Foundation, more than thirty activities are being held these days, including open days at facilities and research centres, talks and informative days, activities aimed at children and tastings of aquaculture products, among others.
