The Director of Studies and Projects of the Biodiversity Foundation, a public foundation of the Government of Spain under the Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs (MARM), Ignacio Torres, participated today in the opening ceremony of the I Iberian Congress on the Reintroduction of Wild Species, in Jerez de la Frontera, in Cádiz.
Until November 9, 2009, specialists in the reintroduction of wildlife species will present the projects they are carrying out there. In this forum, the international regulations of application will also be discussed, the possible ecological, economic and legal repercussions of reintroductions will be analysed and the importance of veterinary aspects will be discussed, as well as the problem of population reinforcement and translocations.
During the first Conference, presentations by experts from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) on the work of this international organization in the field are planned, among others, and that of Borja Heredia, head of the Conservation Actions Area of the General Directorate of Natural Environment and Forest Policy of the MARM, on “Species reintroduction projects and their contribution to the conservation of biodiversity in Spain”.
