The Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry of the Environment invites all citizens, especially children and young people, to visit its website and play with the new proposals that can already be found in the BioDíver section.
Since its launch in November 2005, the web portal of the Biodiversity Foundation has www.fundacion-biodiversidad.es a special section dedicated to children: BioDíver. It is the most dynamic and fun part and contains games – such as riddles, word searches, the recycling game – information about the environment, stories and interesting downloads that teach them to respect and conserve nature. In addition, different characters guide young visitors on their journey through BioDíver. The brown bear “Robin”, the capercaillie “Paquito” and the lynx “Mayú”, accompany the children, while a girl, Tania, and a boy, Yago, guide the teenagers.
The first of the novelties incorporated in the BioDíver section dedicated to the little ones is the creation of two new characters. These are two endangered species, the Balearic toad or ferreret “Tomeu”, and the wolf “Lola”. Each of them stars in one of the new proposals.
Thus, “Paint and color” proposes to the little ones to help the ferreret “Tomeu” to color the portraits that he wants to send to his friends, and for this they can choose from five different drawings, corresponding to the five characters of BioDíver, to color using the brush and the color palette that is shown. Finally, the “Puzzle” consists of solving the favorite puzzles of the wolf “Lola”. Children have the possibility to select two levels, of 12 and 20 pieces, click on each of them and drag them where they think they can fit until they form an image that contains a BioDíver character. Finally, in the game “Discover the character” it is about guessing which endangered species corresponds to the silhouette that is gradually drawn when clicking on the magnifying glass of “Robin”.
The names of the ferreret “Tomeu” and the she-wolf “Lola” were chosen through a contest launched by the magazine “Los Lunnis” among its young readers. The Biodiversity Foundation and the magazine signed an agreement last March through which this publication disseminates environmental content in its pages.
These new hobbies complete the existing ones at BioDíver. Thus, the teenagers already had the game “Guess who sings”, which consists of guessing which bird corresponds to the sound of the bird that is being heard. Another activity that measures their knowledge about nature is the “Environmental Test”. They also have the possibility to expand their knowledge of biodiversity through the Bio-Word Search, which includes numerous concepts, their definition and image. They also have information related to the environment such as books, NGOs, downloads and links.
For their part, the children already had interesting proposals such as the “Recycling Game”. The idea is for the children to learn to recycle by helping the bear “Robin” to deposit in the corresponding container – the organic waste container, the plastic container, the paper container, and the glass container – the 19 objects that appear on the screen. They can also complete the Bio-Word Search proposed by the lynx “Mayú”, and access interesting downloads and entertaining stories through which they can learn more about nature and contribute to its care and conservation.
In addition, the “Game of Mistakes” shows the little ones five scenes that contain a mistake that they must discover in order to continue playing and also learn to take care of the environment in their daily lives. For their part, in the “Memory Game” the children must help the capercaillie “Paquito” to find the two identical photos of the different animals of our fauna that are presented. When the pair gets it right, a text appears with the characteristics of the animals.
