The Ría de Vigo School (Pontevedra) has hosted the first of the 50 workshops that will be held in schools throughout Spain within the framework of the Raised in the EU campaign, an initiative that aims to highlight the advantages of eating, buying and selling sustainable aquatic products produced in the European Union.

The workshop was held in the natural sciences class for 25 sixth grade students. The expert in aquaculture and fisheries at the Toralla Marine Sciences Station in Vigo (ECIMAT), Damián Costas, participated in the workshop to explain to the students what aquaculture consists of and how it is produced in Galicia. The children were interested and participative and raised doubts, mainly about the food safety of aquaculture products.

After this introduction to aquaculture, students now have the opportunity to participate in the Say yes to sustainable aquaculture contest, another of the campaign’s proposals. Until November 1, they can enter the contest with a drawing, photograph or project that shows a fresh, casual and artistic vision of aquaculture. The photo contest is also open to the general public.

In addition, on the occasion of Aquaculture Day, on November 28 an event will be held at the National Museum of Science and Technology (MUNCYT) in which representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment will present the prizes of the Say Yes to Sustainable Aquaculture contest and will present the Raised in the EU campaign.
