In these first months of 2020, the IEEB has the adhesion of two large companies and an association of companies, with a long history of work in the field of sustainability and with the intention of now putting greater efforts into the conservation of biodiversity and natural capital.

The Spanish Business and Biodiversity Initiative (IEEB) is consolidated as a relevant platform in the Spanish context for the consideration of biodiversity from the business sector.

Faced with the great threat posed by the loss of biodiversity, the business world is taking action. According to the World Economic Forum’s 2020 Global Risks Report , companies are more dependent on nature and its resources than previously estimated. The nature-economy link is evident from the data offered by this study, which assesses that just over half of the world’s GDP depends on nature.

Many companies are at the forefront of this change and IEEB companies are clearly pioneers in many aspects, as evidenced by the recently published 2016-2018 Activity Balance.

In these first months of 2020, the IEEB has the adhesion of two large companies and an association of companies, with a long history of work in the field of sustainability and with the intention of now putting greater efforts into the conservation of biodiversity and natural capital.

Port Aventura World is one of the largest tourist resorts in Europe. Located in the heart of the Costa Dorada, it has two theme parks (Port Aventura Park and Ferrari Land), a water park (Port Aventura Caribe Aquatic Park), a golf course, a convention center and four and five-star hotels. With a long history of continuous improvement in environmental issues, it aspires to be a model in sustainability among tourist destinations of its level.

Nestlé is one of the largest food and beverage companies in the world, with a presence in 190 countries and more than 2,000 brands. Its sustainability policy proposes a life cycle analysis approach for all its products and focuses on the conservation and efficiency of natural resources, the conservation of biodiversity, reduction of atmospheric emissions, adaptation to climate change and minimizing waste to zero.

The Spanish Green Growth Group brings together various Spanish companies that want to convey to society and the Public Administrations their vision of the possibilities of developing an economic growth model compatible with the efficient use of natural resources. For this reason, it is incorporated as a strategic partner to create synergies between both initiatives.

During this month of February, the IEEB companies have held a working session with the Secretariat of the Convention for Biological Diversity and the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, in order to learn about possible ways of contributing to the ‘post-2020 process’ (a process currently underway for the definition of a new framework for nature and whose first draft was made public in January).
