The Vice-President and Minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, today presented the annual Work Programme of the Environmental Education for Sustainability Action Plan (PAEAS).
The Vice-President and Minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, today presented the annual Work Programme of the Environmental Education for Sustainability Action Plan (PAEAS). This annual program details the actions that are planned to be initiated or executed during 2022, with complementary information for their implementation, compliance indicators and budget estimates for their financing.
During the presentation, the vice-president stressed that today more than ever we must accelerate the transformation processes in education. In this sense, Ribera stressed that “environmental education will have to end up being the educational reality of each of the well-educated citizens of any society. It is our responsibility and the commitment of PAEAS and the Government.”
Pilar Alegría, Minister of Education and Vocational Training; María Jesús Rodríguez, director of the Autonomous National Parks Agency (OAPN) and the director of the Biodiversity Foundation, Elena Pita, as well as the main entities in the field of environmental education, participated in the event.
The programme presented today has been prepared and agreed by the PAEAS Coordinating Group, responsible for establishing priorities for action based on the government’s lines of work in environmental and sustainability policy. This group is made up of the OAPN and its affiliated centre, the National Centre for Environmental Education (CENEAM) together with the Biodiversity Foundation of MITECO, as well as the Secretary of State for Education and the General Secretariat for Vocational Training of the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training.
A STRATEGIC TOOL FOR SUSTAINABILITY
The PAEAS is a strategic planning document that establishes the objectives and lines of action in the field of Environmental Education for Sustainability to be developed between 2021 and 2025. The programme was approved by the Council of Ministers on 3 August 2021 at the joint proposal of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) and the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, the departments responsible for its drafting.
Environmental education is an essential tool to quickly and actively transition to scenarios of social, economic and environmental sustainabilityand thus achieve a fairer society. This plan seeks to establish a plural, participatory and open plan to society, capable of offering useful, practical and achievable guidelines to contribute to a healthy and sustainable society-environment relationship.
