The director of the Biodiversity Foundation, a public foundation under the Ministry of the Environment, Rural and Marine Affairs, Ana Leiva, participated today, in the Glass Pavilion of the Casa de Campo in Madrid, in the opening ceremony of the 25th edition of the Fair of Organic Products and Responsible Consumption “Biocultura”.
From today until Sunday, November 8, more than 700 exhibitors will offer their sustainable products and services to an audience that is expected to reach 80,000 visitors. More than 15,000 references of organic food products make up the obligatory tour of the fair. In addition, certified hygiene and cosmetic products, eco-materials, furniture and decoration for the home, new technologies in renewable energies, innovation in complementary therapies, savings and recycling products, toys, crafts, music, books and magazines are exhibited and marketed, with special attention, this time, to the eco-tourism sector.
The Biodiversity Foundation supports activities that promote the social recognition of biodiversity as a source of ecological resources and services essential for the health and well-being of citizens. And, in this sense, Biocultura represents a consolidated event in Madrid.
Thus, the space of the Fair will also be conducive for the Biodiversity Foundation to present some of the entrepreneurs whose work was highlighted in the last edition of the Biodiversity Foundation Awards. It will be on Saturday, at 6 p.m., in the Bio ’25 Room on the Upper Floor.
In addition, as every year since 2007, the Biodiversity Foundation collaborates with the Healthy Life Association in the realization of the Ecological Festival of Children “MamaTerra”. It is an activity that is aimed at children but also at their parents and teachers, with workshops on recycling, healthy cooking, organic gardening, renewable energies, ‘plant forests’, water management, theatre, storytelling and concerts. In this way, we want to contribute to raising awareness in society – in this case, children, parents, teachers – because this is the first step in any joint and large-scale action that affects the causes of environmental deterioration.
Another of the initiatives with the support of the Biodiversity Foundation present in Biocultura is the Fair Wood campaign, led by the COPADE Foundation for Development Trade and FSC Spain. In this sense, tomorrow, at 12.30 p.m., at the COPADE stand, Ana Leiva and Miguel Mejía, president of the Association of Wood Processors and Handicrafts (APROMAH), will talk about the work of Honduran artisans and will exhibit pieces of furniture and other objects made of certified and fair trade wood from workshops in that Latin American country and that COPADE sells in its stores in Spain. Honduras and Bolivia.
This will be a unique opportunity to learn first-hand about the experience of a Latin American producer who has managed to obtain an FSC forest certification for his small carpentry workshop and export his furniture to Europe with the financial support, training and advice provided by COPADE and the organizations that support his projects.
