The Biodiversity Foundation, under the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment, has launched the “Beaches, Volunteering and Land Stewardship” programme. Within the framework of this initiative, the role of citizen action in the conservation of nature and landscapes is enhanced, and volunteer actions are launched with land stewardship entities, including marine and river stewardship.
The “Beaches, Volunteering and Land Stewardship” programme is aimed at land stewardship entities that have as their scope of action all the Autonomous Communities located on the Spanish coast (Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, Basque Country, Catalonia, Valencian Community, Region of Murcia, Andalusia, Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, and the Autonomous Cities of Ceuta and Melilla) and, as a novelty this year, in inter-community river basins (North, Duero, Tagus, Guadiana, Guadalquivir, Segura, Júcar and Ebro).
The aim of this programme is to involve citizens in the conservation of the coastline and inter-community watersheds. It also formalises a stable network of volunteers for the maintenance and improvement of these spaces, developing volunteering programmes.
Last year, within the framework of this initiative, some 5,000 citizens participated in the conservation of the coastline through 35 actions developed in collaboration with 30 land stewardship entities. These actions were carried out in all the autonomous communities of the Spanish coast.
All those custodian entities interested in carrying out volunteer actions in the maritime-terrestrial public domain and the hydraulic public domain, can send their proposals to the email mmatas@fundacion-biodiversidad.es.
