The Biodiversity Foundation, a public foundation of the Government of Spain, under the Ministry of the Environment, Rural and Marine Affairs, and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) collaborate in the project “Invasion of the Cabrera Archipelago National Park by introduced algae: dynamics of the invasion and effects on benthic communities” in collaboration with the Autonomous Agency of National Parks.

Within the framework of this agreement, which is about to end, the CSIC is carrying out explanatory studies of the reasons that lead to changes in the population dynamics of invasive algae. Thus, different actions are being carried out, such as monitoring the expansion of different invasive microalgae in the area of the Cabrera National Park: affected communities, distribution and abundance of invasive species. The covering capacity and biomass of invasive species with respect to other native species, especially Posidonia oceanica, are also monitored.

Likewise, the study of the annual life cycle and the morphological and phenological description of the introduced species is carried out. Likewise, the study of the mechanisms that favor invasion is carried out, such as sexual and asexual reproduction, vegetative dispersal, growth rates, the durability and resilience of populations, and palatability by herbivores.
