The Biodiversity Foundation, a public foundation of the Government of Spain, under the Ministry of the Environment, Rural and Marine Affairs, has created a bear patrol in the Pyrenees. This action, which is part of the National Strategy for the Conservation of this endangered species, is the result of the efforts made in recent years by the Public Administrations of the Pyrenees and the different social sectors, which are generating very positive results.
The patrol is made up of local personnel with extensive knowledge of both the local geography, the natural resources of the area and the biology of the species as well as the activity of the Valley. It has been equipped with specialized equipment and technology. It will carry out constant monitoring of the species and the surveillance of its habitat and will contribute to ensuring that the conservation of bears is compatible with rural development and land uses, as these factors are positively related and necessarily complement each other, as is being demonstrated in the Cantabrian Mountains.
The objective of this collaboration is to reduce the mortality of specimens, contribute to the eradication of illegal activities, facilitate the involvement of social sectors in the conservation tasks of the species, especially hunters and ranchers, increase the level of awareness of the population regarding the conservation of the brown bear and promote the socioeconomic development of the region, based on the conservation of its natural resources.
