The Biodiversity Foundation has participated in the LIFE+ project “Activa Red Natura”, an initiative developed by SEO/BirdLife and EFEverde, of the EFE Agency. The project has the participation of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment, the regional governments of the Basque Country, Andalusia, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Madrid, Cantabria, Navarra and the Balearic Islands, and the company Red Eléctrica de España.
The goal of “Activate your authentic wealth. Red Natura” is to disseminate the importance and value of the Natura 2000 Network, the main instrument for the conservation of biodiversity in the European Union. The project was born with the aim of improving the awareness of the population, since 85% are unaware of this tool, through which it is possible to make nature preservation actions compatible with human activity.
The initiative has an endowment of more than two million euros, of which 50% will be financed by the European Union, and will be developed over a period of four years.
The presentation of the project was held on January 9 in the auditorium of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment. The event was chaired by the minister of the sector, Miguel Arias Cañete, and was attended by the president of the EFE Agency, José Antonio Vera, the executive director of SEO/BirdLife, Asunción Ruiz, and the director of Nature, Biodiversity and Land Use of the European Commission, Pía Bucella.
The Natura 2000 Network, which has just celebrated its 20th anniversary, has already reached 30% of the Spanish territory in Spain, which places Spain as the country with the largest area contributed to the European Union’s Natura Network, with fifteen million hectares.
