The Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment has joined as a member of the MEDPAN Organization (Mediterranean Protected Areas Network), which has brought together managers of marine protected areas in the Mediterranean since 1990.
The Biodiversity Foundation has experience in the research and management of marine protected areas as it currently coordinates the LIFE+ Indemares project, an initiative that since 2009 has studied almost five million marine hectares through more than 50 actions and 120 oceanographic campaigns. LIFE+ Indemares began as a list of potential sites of interest where to study the marine environment and has become over the years perhaps the most important project developed in Spain on marine conservation. The main purpose of the project is to identify marine areas with high ecological value to be designated within the framework of the Natura 2000 Network.
THE MEDPAN NETWORK AND ORGANIZATION
The MEDPAN Network was created in 1990 to facilitate exchanges of experiences and information between managers of marine protected areas in the Mediterranean to improve their management through the development of specific tools, and since then it has brought together their managers and provides support in their management activities. It is currently composed of 27 members and 16 partners.
