The Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry of the Environment is outraged by the indiscriminate felling of trees in the street where its headquarters are located.

Since 9:00 a.m. today, workers from the Parks and Gardens Service of the Madrid City Council are pruning the trees in the area and radically cutting down some of them. At the time of issuing this statement, 21 trees on Fortuny Street have been radically cut down.

Technicians from the Biodiversity Foundation have evaluated the felled specimens verifying that although some of them had some type of disease, most of them were healthy trees in full bloom. On the contrary, trees that show clear symptoms of disease are being left standing. They have also pointed out that the felled specimens belong to three different species: lime trees, elms and acacias.

The Biodiversity Foundation has contacted the Parks and Gardens Service of the Madrid City Council where the explanation given is that a technical report has been carried out by which “certain trees are considered dangerous and their felling is necessary”. According to the Biodiversity Foundation, any decision of this type should be made known to citizens residing in the area who have the right to know what is happening in their district.
