The Secretary of State for Rural Affairs and Water, Josep Puxeu, in his capacity as President of the Board of Trustees of the Biodiversity Foundation, has signed an agreement with the President of the Consell de Mallorca, Francina Armengol, for the transfer of the management and maintenance of the Raixa estate, located in the Mallorcan municipality of Bunyola.
This possessió was acquired on 13 December 2001 by the Biodiversity Foundation and the Consell de Mallorca, which since then have held the ownership of two thirds and one third of the property, respectively.
During these years, the Biodiversity Foundation has dedicated its efforts to undertaking the comprehensive rehabilitation works of the estate, trying to preserve the uniqueness of the property and at the same time incorporate the facilities that the new uses will require, all with the ultimate objective of making this historic Mallorcan estate available to the public. In March 2009 the works were completed, and the opening of its doors and the celebration of the first activities organized on the estate were immediately promoted.
The objective of the agreement that has been signed is to formalize and publicize the terms in which from now on the relations between the two co-owners of the property will be subject. Thus, as stated in the initialed document, the Consell de Mallorca assumes exclusive responsibility for the management and administration of the property, both to determine the specific uses of its facilities, and the program of activities that will be carried out in it.
The Biodiversity Foundation, for its part, will continue to be linked as owner to the projection of the estate, as it will continue to monitor its evolution through the Raixa Joint Commission, provided for this purpose in the agreement itself.
The Raixa estate stands out for the beauty of its gardens and the buildings of the estate. Declared of cultural interest in 1993 for its high historical and artistic value, the estate has an area of 520,000 square meters, 4,500 of which correspond to buildings, while the rest is made up of various gardens, recreation areas and forest areas. The value of this heritage asset for the citizens of Mallorca makes it necessary to have a management model that is close to the reality of the island itself. The Consell de Mallorca takes on the challenge of carrying out this management in response to the current needs and potential of the estate.
From today begins a new stage, whose objective is to facilitate the use and enjoyment of the citizens of such an emblematic building. To this end, the Consell de Mallorca has drawn up a management and maintenance plan for the property to facilitate the use and access to the property, focused on giving continuity to the restoration process of the historic gardens and the implementation of a museum on the geography of Raixa. In this new stage, the aim is to bring this emblematic space of the island closer to all Mallorcans, the ultimate recipients of all the efforts made in recent years by both institutions.
