The director of the Biodiversity Foundation, a public foundation of the Government of Spain, under the Ministry of the Environment, Rural and Marine Affairs, Ana Leiva, and the mayor of Puebla de Sanabria, José Fernández Blanco, today presented the works corresponding to the first phase of the actions in the Sierra de la Culebra for the defense of the wolf. The sub-delegate of the Government in Zamora, Josefa Chicote, also participated in this event.

The Biodiversity Foundation and the City Council of Puebla de Sanabria (Zamora) have been collaborating since 2007 on this project. The Sierra de la Culebra is a privileged place, with more than 65,000 hectares, capable of hosting the population with the highest density of Iberian wolves in the Iberian Peninsula and in the entire European Union.

Through this initiative, carried out by the Sanabria City Council, it is intended to carry out dissemination work on the figure of the wolf and raise public awareness of its importance for biodiversity in the Iberian Peninsula. It also aims to study and recover the species and promote the sustainable development of the area.

The Biodiversity Foundation has promoted the first phase of this project, in which different actions have been carried out, such as the conditioning of the longitudinal forest track to the Truchas Stream, the opening of direct access to the area where the reception and information centre is located and the location of interior paths.
