The director of the Biodiversity Foundation, Ana Leiva, accompanied by the Sub-delegate of the Government of Spain in the province of Cuenca, Julio Magdalena, and the Mayor of the City Council of Enguídanos (Cuenca), José Vicente Antón, has presented the project “Comprehensive protection of the flora, vegetation and habitats of Enguídanos”.

The basic objective of this initiative is to design and develop a global and integrated strategy at the local level, which allows the conservation of the flora, vegetation and habitats of the municipality in a way that is compatible with its socio-economic development, through the protection of spaces, citizen participation, dissemination and research.

The City Council of Enguídanos with the execution of the project “Integral protection of flora, vegetation and priority habitats in the municipality of Enguídanos (Cuenca)”, beneficiary in the 2009 Call for Grants of the Biodiversity Foundation, seeks the recognition of spaces that contain environmental values that can be declared a Protected Natural Area at the regional level. The municipality, in order to develop these conservation actions, has involved the population and socio-economic agents, disseminating knowledge about the biological diversity of the municipality and the projects that are being developed for its conservation.

Coinciding with the celebration of the International Year of Biodiversity, the Biodiversity Foundation has launched the campaign “Talk about biodiversity”, which aims to get citizens to appropriate the term, integrate it into their language, understand its meaning and use it in their daily lives, making them participants in the conservation of the planet’s natural resources. This campaign establishes the connections between biodiversity, health, quality of life, economy and employment.

The City Council of Enguídanos has joined this campaign by developing, from April to the end of the year, actions with the theme of biodiversity as a common framework. Thus, under the title Enguinatur 2010, Talk about Biodiversity, it is holding conferences, training sessions, field trips, etc.
