The Secretary General for Territory and Biodiversity of the Ministry of the Environment, Antonio Serrano, and the Secretary of State for International Cooperation, Leire Pajín, presented last Friday the “Alliance for Water”, a solidarity initiative aimed at promoting water supply and infrastructure in Central America.
The main axis of the “Alliance for Water” is to contribute to achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals in those aspects that refer to the supply of drinking water, which focus on reducing by half the population without access to drinking water and basic sanitation by 2015. Currently, 1 billion people do not have access to safe drinking water and some 2.6 billion lack basic sanitation services.
The “Alliance for Water” aims to promote practices of rational use of water among the Spanish population and the different economic sectors, with the aim of allocating 2 million euros a year to water-related projects in Central America to ensure that 5 million more Central Americans have access to drinking water and sanitation in adequate conditions by 2015.
