The Ministry of the Environment signs an agreement with the Madrid City Council for the development of actions in the field of reuse

The Minister of the Environment, Cristina Narbona, and the Mayor of Madrid, Alberto Ruiz Gallardón, today presided over the signing of a cooperation commitment between the State Water Company of the Tagus Basin and the Madrid City Council for the construction and operation of actions aimed at the reuse of treated water in Madrid. in compliance with the objectives of the A.G.U.A. Program of the Ministry of the Environment, which includes actions to improve the management of water resources.

The cost of the planned actions amounts to 35 million euros, of which the state-owned company Aguas del Tajo will contribute 30% and will advance the rest of the financing to the Madrid City Council.

With these actions, it will be possible to increase the production capacity of recycled water in the Community of Madrid to 34 cubic hectometres per year. In recent months, the Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) of La Gavia and the Medium-Upper Basin of Arroyo Culebro have come into operation, equipped with an advanced water reuse system. At the end of this year, the WWTP of the Lower Basin of the Arroyo Culebro will be commissioned.

With this agreement, the Ministry of the Environment highlights its commitment to integrated water management that defends reuse as a tool to guarantee the availability of water resources, by allowing them to be successfully used in different uses, such as agriculture, industry or recreation, reserving top quality water for human consumption.
