The ninth meeting of the Management Committee of the LIFE+ Capercaillie is held

The Management Committee of the LIFE+ Capercaillie met today at 10:30 a.m. at the headquarters of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment to address the latest progress made within the framework of the project, which works on the conservation of this endangered species.

At the ninth meeting of the LIFE+ Capercaillie Management Committee , the latest actions carried out were discussed, including the release of specimens of the species bred in captivity, a historic milestone in Spain.

The actions planned for the first half of 2015 were also addressed. A set of initiatives that include the management of the capercaillie habitat and the control of predators and competitors, as well as the continuation of the actions developed in the context of the breeding centre, the capture and radio monitoring programme, and the reinforcement and custody programmes.

Likewise, future actions to disseminate the project have also been addressed, such as the holding of an informative seminar and the design of the latest informative materials of the project.

The LIFE+ Cantabrian Capercaillie, coordinated by the Biodiversity Foundation, has as its fundamental objective to stop the decline of this subspecies exclusive to the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula and promote its recovery. The project, 50% co-financed through the LIFE+ programme , the European Union’s financial instrument for the environment, has as partners the Autonomous Communities of Cantabria, the Principality of Asturias and Castilla y León, the latter through the Natural Heritage Foundation of Castilla y León; the Interregional Consortium for the Coordinated Management of the Picos de Europa National Park; Tragsa and Tragsatec, SEO/BirdLife and with funding from the Autonomous National Parks Agency and the Iberdrola Foundation.
