The Executive Board of the Spanish Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO has appointed Antonio Serrano, Secretary General for Territory and Biodiversity of the Ministry of the Environment, as President of the Spanish Committee of UNESCO’s MaB Programme (known as MaB for short for its acronym in English, Man and Biosphere).

UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme has been an advanced tool for formulating criteria and exemplifying a new model of relationship between man and nature. As a result of its work, an International Network of Protected Areas has emerged, which, to date, covers more than 400 reserves in 90 countries.

Antonio Serrano, who replaces Javier Catroviejo as President of the Spanish Committee, is Professor of Urban Planning and Territorial Planning and since April 2004 has held the General Secretariat for Territory and Biodiversity.
