The director of the Biodiversity Foundation, Ana Leiva, visited Lleida, Catalonia, on October 7 to evaluate the results of two forest fire conservation and prevention projects, supported by the Foundation in that region.

The conference on “Fire prevention and fight against forest fires” held in Cervera served to disseminate the results of the work carried out this year within the framework of the project on the prevention of erosion and fire in agricultural activity in Catalonia, carried out by the Union of Farmers of Catalonia, with the support of the Biodiversity Foundation.

In addition, the content of the booklet of good agricultural practices aimed at farmers and ranchers was disseminated, in order to minimize the risk of fire in agricultural activity, especially in the regions most vulnerable to desertification. Hence, another similar meeting is planned to be held in Horta de Sant Joan.

Actions to conserve scavenger birds

On the other hand, in the town of Tremp, Ana Leiva visited the area where the Associació Naturalista del Pallars Jussá, in collaboration with the Biodiversity Foundation, has developed the project “Adaptation of a supplementary feeding point for scavenger birds in the Sierra de Llerás”.

This initiative aims to contribute to the conservation of the populations of scavenger birds in the Pyrenees, especially the Egyptian vulture, the red kite and the black kite, while promoting ornithological tourism in the region. With sustainable management of the Sierra de Llerás, it will be possible to reduce the deaths of scavenger birds due to the ingestion of toxins or harmful elements from the inter-regional landfill of urban solid waste of Tremp.
