Volunteer actions for the conservation of Spanish rivers

The Beaches, Rivers, Volunteering and Land Stewardship Programme of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment, promotes the role of citizen action in the conservation of coastal and river ecosystems. In total, During 2015, 38 projects will be carried out: 24 in rivers and 14 on beaches. These initiatives are being held through the work of 34 entities.
 
The programme, which has been in operation since 2012, has already mobilised nearly 60 organisations and more than 16,000 volunteers in past editions. Some of the activities proposed for the next few days are developed by the Association for the Conservation of Natural Ecosystems, Reforesta and the Galician Association of Land Stewardship.
 
The Association for the Conservation of Natural Ecosystems (CEN) will carry out a control of invasive exotic trees on September 24, 25 and 26 in the vicinity of the Siurana River, in Tarragona. In addition, on April 25, a workshop called “The secret inhabitants of the river. Discovering aquatic macroinvertebrates”.
 
For its part, the Reforesta Association will be dedicated to the maintenance of reforestation in the Tagus Hydrographic Basin on September 5, with special dedication to the summer irrigation of La Pedriza and Manzanares del Real (Madrid). On July 4 and 11, it carried out reforestation activities in La Pedriza, and cleaned riverbanks in San Agustín de Guadalix, respectively.
 
Finally, the Galician Association of Land Stewardship, within the framework of environmental volunteering in the mines of the Miño River, will carry out conservation activities of traditional mowing meadows, in addition to tasks of elimination of exotic species from the flooded forest, maintenance of refuge boxes for bats and construction of refuges for fauna, throughout the 13th, August 14, 20 and 21.
