The “Beaches, Rivers, Volunteering and Land Stewardship” Programme, launched by the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment, will carry out different volunteering actions during the month of September with the intention of conserving Spanish rivers and beaches.

This programme began in 2012 and has already mobilised nearly 60 organisations and more than 16,000 volunteers in past editions, enhancing the role of citizen action in the conservation of coastal and river ecosystems. In total, during 2015 38 projects will be carried out: 24 in rivers and 14 on beaches. These initiatives are being held through the work of 34 entities.

The Spanish Ornithological Society (SEO/Birdlife) is organising the first of these initiatives in September, which will take place on the 5th and 26th on the beach of Bañugues, Gozón (Asturias). The volunteering, which is being held for the fourth time, will take place between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. and will include activities such as the observation of migratory birds, the introduction to exotic flora and its problems, the eradication of the main invasive species.

In addition, solid waste will be collected on the beach and the causes and consequences of this pollution will be analysed. All this with the aim of interpreting the landscape and highlighting its values and the need for its conservation.

The second of the volunteering actions will take place in the Tirón Háchigo River Park (La Rioja) on September 5 and 12. In the first of them, volunteers will help to remove the wood that makes it impossible for machines to work to repair the damage to the River Park and on the second day a second day of volunteering will be held to clean the track that runs next to the breakwater and relocate the handrail. This initiative is coordinated by the Socio-Cultural Association City of Libya.

Finally, GOB Menorca will organize a volunteer action in Mongofre Nou (Menorca) on September 13 that will consist of the removal of waste and cleaning of the beach of s’Estany.
