Today we join the celebration of World Oceans Day, which this year revolves around initiatives to prevent plastics in the sea and propose measures to achieve cleaner oceans.

With the Environmental Volunteering Program we encourage the involvement of citizens in the conservation of the environment. On the occasion of our 20th anniversary, the protagonists will be children and young people, whom we want to involve this summer in the conservation of ecosystems, the coastline and watersheds.

To achieve greater sustainability of fishing and aquaculture activities and maintain an ocean rich in biodiversity and resources, the Pleamar Program has a call for grants open until June 20.

Within the framework of LIFE IP INTEMARES, the largest marine conservation project in Europe, we continue to work on the research and protection of Natura 2000 species and habitats at sea, with the participation of all sectors involved.

Among the actions planned in the coming months, we will launch participatory processes in marine demarcations to draw up management plans for marine spaces.

Specifically, we are working on updating the management plan for El Cachucho, the Sites of Community Importance (SCI) and Special Protection Areas for Birds (SPAs) that are the responsibility of the General State Administration off the coasts of the Valencian Community, Murcia and Tarragona, as well as the 39 SPAs declared in the LIFE+ INDEMARES. We will also open a participatory process of updating the management plans of the 24 Macaronesian Special Areas of Conservation (SACs).

Explore marine spaces

In the field of research, three oceanographic campaigns are planned in the south of Mallorca, the Avilés Canyon and the Canary Islands in order to improve the knowledge of these areas and evaluate the impact of human activities.

Conserving the species and habitats of marine protected areas is also our priority. This year we celebrate the year of the ferruginous limpet (Patella ferruginea), whose conservation strategy is in the process of being updated. We will also continue to act to save the pen shell (Pinna nobilis), a mollusk endemic to the Mediterranean in a critical situation.

We are also strengthening cooperation mechanisms for the joint management of the marine protected areas of the Natura 2000 Network with coastal autonomous communities and cities and other ministries. In this line, a training plan for the Navy with nearly 1,000 participants to improve the knowledge necessary for the management of the Natura 2000 Network in the marine environment.
