We have just presented a new climate change scenario viewer from the National Platform on Adaptation to Climate Change (AdapteCCa), a tool that allows any user to consult regionalized climate change projections for Spain.
This viewer, which has been developed within the framework of the LIFE SHARA project and the National Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change (PNACC), is an initiative of the Spanish Office for Climate Change, the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and the Biodiversity Foundation, and in which the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) has collaborated. This tool places Spain at the forefront of countries that promote interactive climate projections.
This new application allows you to consult and download information based on different criteria such as: specific geographical areas (autonomous communities, provinces, municipalities, river basins, SPAs, etc.), climatic variables (there are 21 indices related to precipitation, temperature, humidity and wind), two emission scenarios (RCP 4.5 and 8.5), as well as a reference-historical scenario and by year or season.
The viewer is mainly based on two data sources: point projections from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and grid projections from the international Euro-CORDEX initiative. The products offered come from projections with daily data generated using dynamic and statistical regionalization techniques.
The objective of this tool is to provide quality and up-to-date information on the future climate accessible to all audiences, also to facilitate the development of impact studies, and to implement measures to adapt to climate change.
This new viewer was created as a tool open to continuous improvement, open to the needs of different sectors and with flexibility to incorporate new data sources in the medium term.
The LIFE SHARA project “Awareness and knowledge for adaptation to climate change” aims to strengthen governance and increase resilience to climate change in Spain and Portugal. LIFE SHARA is coordinated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and the Environment, through the Biodiversity Foundation, technically directed by the Spanish Office for Climate Change and also with the participation of the AEMET, the Autonomous Agency of National Parks -through the National Center for Environmental Education (CENEAM)- and the Portuguese Environment Agency.
