We offset our carbon footprint

Share on:

We are among the first 3 and only public sector entities in Spain that calculate, reduce and offset our carbon footprint. At the Biodiversity Foundation we have been calculating our footprint since 2009 and registering it since 2014 in the Official Register of the Spanish Office for Climate Change. The methodology we use is the ISO 14064-1 standard and the OECC calculator, taking 1+2+3 as scopes.

Knowledge of the carbon footprint allows us to take measures aimed at reducing or offsetting it, thus achieving good results over the years. In 2015, total emissions were 386.21tCO2e. We closed 2016 with a total emissions of 289.21tCO2e, of which we offset 15.2% (44 tCO2) through the REFO-RESTA CO2 absorption project. With the 2017 footprint (175.29tCO2e of emissions), we achieved two objectives; on the one hand, the compensation of 29.6% (54 t ofCO2) through the REFO-RESTA CO2 (INCLAM CO2) absorption project and on the other hand, an overall reduction of close to 45% in the period 2014-2017.

Almost all of our emissions are associated with scope 3 (indirect emissions associated with the organisation’s activity) because we work with electricity suppliers that offer electricity from renewable energies and that the emissions of the beneficiary entities of our calls for aid represent the largest amount.

The carbon footprint of 2016 and 2017 has been offset through the acquisition of part of the CO2 equivalent capture rights of an INCLAM forest in Santa María del Campo (Burgos). The OECC has recognised the compensation of these years, granting us the seal that recognises our great work of calculating, reducing and offsetting, and that places us at the head of entities that have the complete seal.
