In October of this year, the fifteenth Conference of the Parties (COP15) of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity(CBD) will be held. 10 years after the establishment of the Aichi targets, a new Global Biodiversity Framework must be approved at this COP15 in order to fulfill the 2050 Vision “Living in harmony with nature“.
Representatives of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, the Biodiversity Foundation, the CBD Secretariat and Business for Nature have shared the keys to understanding this upcoming international event and analysing how companies can participate. Thus, representatives of the companies and partners of the Spanish Business and Biodiversity Initiative (IEEB) have been able to learn about the latest advances that are being made in this process of defining the new global strategy on biodiversity.
The meeting was attended by Bianca Brasil, from the CBD Secretariat, who framed the process of this biodiversity COP and gave the keys to business participation in it. He urged to take advantage of the crucial moment that this year 2020 represents, called by some as the ‘Super Year of biodiversity’.
Representatives of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge have insisted on the need to accelerate decision-making and increase efforts during the October Summit to implement a more ambitious plan that includes biodiversity conservation objectives in a clear and measurable way. The role played by the IEEB in meeting the country objectives for the Convention on Biological Diversity in terms of the involvement of the private sector was also highlighted.
The meeting was attended by the Business for Nature platform, represented by Julia Moreno, Senior Manager of Forética, who encouraged companies to be part of this business initiative focused on incorporating biodiversity by the private sector in international negotiations.
With this conference, the Biodiversity Foundation offers different tools and visions to IEEB companies with the aim of encouraging their active participation in what is known as the 2020 process, which are all the actions launched to define the new framework for nature at the next COP 15.
This meeting has allowed companies to learn first-hand, and from relevant actors in this process, the framework of this biodiversity COP, the post-2020 process and the potential ways of participation that companies that are part of the IEEB may have.
