Identification of Essential Habitats for the conservation of elasmobranchs in the Mediterranean Sea using molecular techniques (IHELASMED)

LIFE

  • The project aims to improve the conservation of elasmobranchs by reducing their bycatch, promoting sustainable alternative fisheries and encouraging ecotourism.
  • It will provide genetic and hormonal studies that will allow us to know the genetic diversity, connectivity, philopatry and reproductive status of the target species Raja radula and Rostroraja alba.

The project aims to improve elasmobranch conservation by promoting sustainable fisheries targeting invasive alien species instead of elasmobranchs, and by encouraging ecotourism based on sustainable diving for the protection of their aggregation areas.

It has these specific goals:

  • Contribute to the identification of essential fish habitats for endangered species and collaborate with the competent authorities for the definition of management measures in accordance with the objectives of the actions of the 2030 Biodiversity Strategy.
  • Identify areas within Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), which host elasmobranch aggregations, and propose them as strictly protected areas.
  • Genetic analyses using mitochondrial DNA.
  • Sequencing of the genome of Rostroraja alba to study its connectivity and philopatria.
  • Analysis of sex hormones in elasmobranchs, which will provide a more complete view of the reproductive status of these species.
