The actions are aimed at promoting connectivity between the two bear populations in the Cantabrian Mountains, acting on the factors that have led to habitat fragmentation.
The aim is to generate a favorable social scenario for the species and eliminate the risks of illegal trapping and the use of poisons.
The project is specifically focused on strengthening the role of the Leitariegos area as a corridor (narrowing between León and Asturias in the western population of Cantabrian bears) in order to facilitate the flow of specimens and contribute to avoiding the fragmentation of the western population. Likewise, it is intended to guarantee connectivity between the two populations of the Cantabrian brown bear, through actions that contribute to creating a social scenario favourable to the presence of the brown bear and to habitat management measures in the territorial area of the corridor.
Within the framework of the project, the flow of specimens and, therefore, the necessary genetic exchange between both populations of brown bears will be facilitated, through actions to eliminate illegal trapping and the use of poisons in the territorial area of the corridor.
