Wetland management and restoration to halt the decline of aquatic warbler populations (LIFE AWOM)

LIFE

  • The project focuses on the conservation of the aquatic warbler (Acrocephalus paludicola) in its stopping and wintering areas along its migratory route.
  • It seeks to develop a network of climate-resilient sites and develop habitat management and restoration techniques in degraded wetlands within the Natura 2000 network, also benefiting other marsh and aquatic birds in the wetlands.

It has the following specific objectives:

  • To create a database of all records of aquatic warbler and wetlands with the presence of the species in Spain.
  • Improve aquatic warbler populations by restoring wetlands to improve their ecological functionality.
  • Inform the general public about the importance of restoring wetland habitats to improve aquatic warbler populations, as well as improve habitats of community interest and threatened flora and fauna populations.
  • Generate information for key indicators of the status of aquatic warbler populations and other threatened bird species.
  • Diagnosis of wetlands and presence of aquatic warbler.
  • Implementation of ecological restoration measures.
  • Development of a communication and awareness strategy.
  • Dissemination campaign and training of volunteers.
