Spanish Aquaculture Observatory

MAPA

The Spanish Aquaculture Observatory (OESA) is a project of the Ministry of Environment’s Biodiversity Foundation. for Ecological Transition. Its objective is to serve as a platform for monitoring and analyzing the development of aquaculture in Spain, promoting its sustainability, strengthening its image in society, supporting research projects, technological development and, especially, environmental innovation, fostering knowledge transfer and supporting international cooperation. To achieve these objectives, the project has five lines of work:

  1. Bringing Aquaculture closer to society
  2. Strengthening of science-sector relations
  3. Resources and training
  4. Environment and sustainable development
  5. International Cooperation

This project is developed by the Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture Area . of the Fundación Biodiversidad and allows the continuity of the work developed since 2002 by the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) and the Secretaría General de Pesca Marítima, through the creation of the Observatorio Español de Acuicultura and, from 2008 until December 31, 2014, through the Fundación Observatorio Español de Acuicultura under the protectorate of the Ministerio de Agricultura, Alimentación y Medio Ambiente (Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment). The activities carried out up to 2014 can be consulted in the reports published by the Observatory.

Among the highlights are the exhibition Aquaculture? Discover itwhich since 2010 has visited more than one million people in its various itineraries, the coordination of the activities scheduled in Spain on the occasion of the celebration of the Aquaculture Day, the November 30The monitoring of the evaluation of the Spanish aquaculture sector and related R&D&i activities, including the preparation of reports and studies and the monitoring and implementation of the Multiannual Strategic Plan for Spanish Aquaculture 2014-2020 linked to the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund.

During 2016, the Biodiversity Foundation is promoting, within the framework of the Aquaculture Day, the implementation of the Commission’s #FarmedintheEU Campaign, which aims to raise awareness among children and young people about the advantages of farming, buying and consuming sustainable aquaculture products. The Observatory also keeps updated the main data of the databases related to aquaculture R&D&I activities carried out in our country, including information related to research centers and companies, researchers and technicians, their projects and scientific publications, among others, and offered to different audiences and agents,
training and informative materials and resources related to the sector, such as the “Guide on sustainable aquaculture for the media”, the “Discover aquaculture
related to the sector, such as the“Guide on sustainable aquaculture for the media“, the workshops“Discover aquaculture“, aimed at schoolchildren or the story “The emperor’s dream”.

for the youngest children.

The Observatory publishes a monthly electronic newsletter with information of interest and current news related to the national and international aquaculture sector and the activities carried out by the Fundación Biodiversidad. It also includes interviews with personalities from the scientific world and the production sector, outstanding R+D+i projects and publications of interest.
