The European Biodiversity Partnership publishes a call to analyse transformative processes to halt biodiversity loss

  • Endowed with more than 40 million euros, the call will support projects focused on identifying, analysing and understanding the transformation processes that can halt and reverse biodiversity loss
  • The Biodiversity Foundation will finance the participation of Spanish entities that develop their projects in the marine or coastal environment, as in previous calls such as BiodivProtect or BiodivMonitoring

The European Biodiversity Partnership (Biodiversa+), a consortium in which the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) participates, together with the State Research Agency (AEI), the Centre for Technological Development and Innovation (CDTI) and 80 other environmental entities, has published its fourth call for proposals for this period 2021-2027, focusing on biodiversity and transformative change (#BiodivTransform).
The call plans to support projects focused on understanding the interactions and links between the crises of biodiversity loss, climate change and pollution and identifying, analysing and understanding the transformation processes that can safeguard biodiversity and the benefits it can provide to people.
This call, endowed with more than 40 million euros, is aimed at interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary and intersectoral research and innovation projects that demonstrate academic excellence, with the potential to have a local, regional or global social and political impact in relation to biodiversity, with the aim of connecting science, society, policy and practices for transformative change.
It is expected that the selected proposals will contribute significantly to the generation of scientific knowledge and tools to safeguard biodiversity in the context of transformative change.
The scope of this call covers research on biodiversity and transformative change in all parts of the world, and is not limited to specific environments or geographical areas, but covers all domains (terrestrial, marine, coastal and freshwater) and ecosystems experiencing various levels and sources of disturbance.
Pre-proposals can be submitted until November 8, 2024 and, for all interested entities, the Biodiversa+ consortium will organize an informative seminar next Wednesday, September 25.
Since 2021, when the Foundation joined the Partnership, three calls have been published: BiodivProtect to support the protection of terrestrial and marine biodiversity, in which the Foundation is supporting three projects: EUROSYNG, PETRI-MED, SponBIODIV; BiodivMon to improve the monitoring of biodiversity and ecosystem changes at a transnational level for science and society, with 6 projects in execution supported: DNASense, MoSTFun, EMPHATIC, SEAGHOSTS, CAMBioMed and BioBoost+; BiodivNBS, a call for research on Nature-based Solutions, the resolution of which will be published by the Partnership during the last quarter of 2024.
EUROPEAN BIODIVERSITY PARTNERSHIP The European Biodiversity Partnership (Biodiversa+) is one of the key actions of the European Union (EU) EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030 under the framework programme for research and innovation (I+I) for the period 2021 -2027, Horizon Europe. Biodiversa+, action 81 of the European Biodiversity Strategy, aims to return European biodiversity to the path of recovery by 2030, through the implementation of an ambitious programme of actions including: financing research projects of excellent quality and great impact on society; establishing a harmonised European network of biodiversity observatories; supporting the implementation of Nature-based Solutions by the private sector; better connect R+I with governance; and promoting the EU’s role in R+I on biodiversity at global level.
