The Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has appointed Félix Romero Cañizares as the new director of the Biodiversity Foundation, replacing Elena Pita, who currently holds the position of director general of the Spanish Office for Climate Change.
Félix Romero Cañizares (1975) has a degree in Environmental Sciences from the University of Castilla-La Mancha and a technical forestry engineer from the Polytechnic University of Madrid. He also has postgraduate training in Business Administration (University of Chichester, United Kingdom); International Cooperation (European Institute Campus Stellae, Santiago de Compostela) and Foreign Trade (College of Political Scientists and Sociologists, Madrid).
With a professional career of more than 20 years linked to nature conservation and sustainable forest management, Romero previously held, between 2019 and 2023, the position of Director General of Natural Environment and Biodiversity in the Ministry of Sustainable Development of the Government of Castilla-La Mancha. He has also held international responsibilities at the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), where he was Global Head of Market Development, Regional Director for Europe and President of FSC-Spain. Between 2002 and 2012, he worked as head of the Forestry Programme of WWF Spain.
From his new responsibility at the head of the Biodiversity Foundation, Romero faces the challenge of continuing to strengthen the work of the entity in promoting the conservation of natural capital, the protection of species and habitats, adaptation to climate change and the development of ecological restoration projects, in collaboration with public and private entities throughout the territory. as well as sectors such as academia, science and environmental NGOs.
The Biodiversity Foundation, which is part of MITECO, plays a fundamental role in the implementation of actions under the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (RTRP) through strategic projects for urban renaturation, ecosystem restoration and conservation of marine and terrestrial biodiversity, promotion of the bioeconomy or promotion of the circular economy, making a decisive contribution to the ecological transition of our country.
It also manages LIFE projects and projects linked to ERDF funds, European Social Fund + and European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund, for training and training in ecological transition and the promotion of the green and blue economy.
