- It develops 323 projects from 16 calls for grants that work on multiple topics with an economic volume of 535.6 million
- Eight calls related to the renaturalisation of cities, circular economy, biodiversity conservation and best practices in the Doñana area are about to be resolved
- In addition, the deadlines for submitting four other calls launched under the ERDF, ESF+ and FEMPA, which represent an amount of almost 74 million to promote the bioeconomy, the restoration of marine habitats, training and employment for the ecological transition and fisheries sustainability, have just closed
29 July 2025– The Third Vice-President and Minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Sara Aagesen, today chaired the meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Biodiversity Foundation, in which the main milestones of these first six months of activity were announced.
The eight calls for aid that are close to being resolved stand out:
- Renaturalisation of urban environments: Endowed with 39.8 million euros and for which 12 proposals have been pre-selected, currently in the reformulation phase by the municipalities. The great reception of this new ERDF call demonstrates the consolidation of the renaturalization of cities as a line of high demand for local entities. In total, 87 proposals have been received, which have requested 276.1 million. All these projects, as well as the more than 70 that are currently being implemented within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (RTRP), contribute to consolidating a network of interconnected green and blue spaces rich in biodiversity, in which nature and the benefits it provides, such as health, well-being or leisure, are integrated.
- Three calls linked to the promotion of the circular economy in companies (one transversal (40.4 million); another aimed at the textile sector (97.5 million) and a last one to the plastics sector (97.5 million).
- A call to promote best practices in the agricultural field of Doñana (11.5 million).
- A call to support LIFE projects and digitalisation of biodiversity data (8 million).
- A call for support for programmes and projects to promote green infrastructure through the generation of knowledge, endowed with 5.9 million and also co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
- Finally, another within the framework of Biodiversa+ (BiodivTransform) to support research and innovation projects that identify, analyse and understand the transformation processes that can preserve biodiversity by mitigating its threats.
In total, these eight calls for aid that are close to being resolved, represent an investment of more than 300 million to generate changes in city planning, face the demographic challenge and promote, in others, changes in production processes and circularity in the business sector.
Likewise, and with an endowment of almost 74 million in aid for the promotion of the bioeconomy, research in the marine environment, the sustainability of fishing and aquaculture activity and training and employment for the ecological transition, the deadlines for receiving proposals have just closed and in a few months the final resolution will be made. The Board of Trustees has celebrated the extraordinary demand that all these calls have had, which will be resolved in the coming months, after the evaluation phase of the proposals received.
323 PROJECTS IN EXECUTION
Currently, the Biodiversity Foundation finances 323 projects, corresponding to 16 calls for grants, which are being implemented and for which technical and economic monitoring is maintained. These projects represent an economic volume of 533.8 million for the ecological transition.
These projects stand out for their capillarity throughout the territory of the State, the wide diversity of actors involved, where local entities and especially the productive sectors have a prominent role, as well as for facing the demographic challenge. All of them are based on the best available scientific knowledge, which ensures great rigor in the necessary adaptation to the new environmental and climate reality.
RIGOROUS AND IMPACTFUL
COMMUNICATIONCommunication is another of the transversal lines that makes it possible to publicise the activity carried out by the Biodiversity Foundation (MITECO), as well as to convey messages to society about the challenges, benefits and opportunities of the ecological transition. To do this, different communication channels and content are used to adapt messages to different audiences.
Among these channels, social networks stand out, which after achieving the milestone of exceeding one million followers in 2024 on all its profiles (X, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and TikTok), the Foundation continues to grow in content, impact and prescribers. The growth this semester in the number of followers on networks compared to the previous semester has been 26,447 new ones. The Foundation thus remains one of the leading entities in the environmental sector in terms of number and impact of content.
More than 2,510 publications have been published on all the social networks of the Biodiversity Foundation, which add up to a total reach of 11,735,984 people and more than 628,000 interactions. This means an average of 16 publications per day. Likewise, the Foundation’s website has registered more than 469,100 page views.
