Business opportunities around MicroALGAE on the Cantabrian coast (MALGAS)

Empleaverde program

The initiative aims to promote the business opportunities that can be identified around microalgae, as a source of new companies and employment.

The initiative aims to promote the business opportunities that can be identified around microalgae, as a source of new companies and employment.

MALGAS presents to professionals from the economic sectors linked to renewable energies, environmental R+D+i, wastewater treatment and purification, specific activities related to mitigation and adaptation to climate change and agro-energy crops, the business opportunities that may arise around microalgae.

All this from a triple perspective: wastewater treatment, CO2 fixation (oxygenation of the atmosphere) and production of biofuels, potentially and really increasing the number of natural and legal persons who participate professionally in this type of sustainable companies and activities.

The MALGAS project arises from the existence of a vast scientific knowledge that has studied more than 60,000 strains of microalgae controlled, tested and modified. The current developments and innovation around this industry must focus on the application of adequate means for its growth and competitive processes for the subsequent transformation of the biomass obtained. The latter is a less scientific activity and much more business-like, entrepreneurial and applied.

Thus, the objectives of the project are:

  • To publicize the potential of microalgae technology from the executive level of companies, through the mid-line technical staff, to the level most linked to operations.
  • Support at least 10 entrepreneurial projects in the field of microalgae, which arise from the actions of the awareness days and the planned training actions.
  • Establish and maintain a support platform for small entrepreneurs interested in the possible businesses that may arise linked to the field of microalgae.

The recipients of this project are workers of SMEs and micro-SMEs and self-employed workers – technicians, consultants, operators and liberal professionals – from the following sectors:

– Renewable Energies
– Environmental R+D+i
– Wastewater treatment and purification
– Specific activities related to climate change mitigation and adaptation
– Agro-energy crops
People who are unemployed in any of these sectors and are job seekers.

The project will train 200 recipients, although it will reach 2,850 workers, will serve to create two companies in the field of microalgae and will support at least ten entrepreneurial projects in the field of microalgae.
